Paul McCobb (1917–1969) was an American furniture designer known for his sleek, functional, and minimalist designs that helped define mid-century modern style. He gained prominence in the 1950s with his Planner Group furniture line, which was affordable, modular, and designed for mass production. McCobb’s work emphasized clean lines, slender legs, and practical elegance, often using materials like maple, iron, and brass. His designs extended beyond furniture to lighting, textiles, and accessories, collaborating with brands such as Directional, Calvin Furniture, and Winchendon Furniture Company. Despite his influence, McCobb remained relatively underrecognized compared to contemporaries like Charles Eames and Florence Knoll. Today, his work is highly collectible, appreciated for its timeless simplicity and functional beauty, and continues to influence modern furniture design.
